Camera Lens
Let’s face it. Selfie photos can be hard to take. My short arms are my excuse. Stan and I have countless selfies from our travels. Our faces fill the picture and sometimes you can make out the background scenery. Yet the purpose of our picture is to capture ourselves in a magnificent landscape or landmark. We have managed to capture some majestic photos, but we are humbled when we visit art galleries of professional nature photographers. Even when I see the photos of fellow travelers, I am struck by the difference of perspective.
It matters who is taking the picture, what they are focusing on, and what story they want to tell. Being aware of perspective has brought to life my contemplation of the Bible and my experiences with God. I notice who is telling the story—is it Matthew? Mark? Or the story in the story—is Jesus speaking? I imagine myself as a different person in the story than I normally would—maybe as a child or a foreigner or a tax collector. Or I imagine watching the story play out from a different viewpoint. How would a teenager in the crowd have witnessed and retold the story of Jesus and the moneychangers? Consider these approaches when approaching reading the Bible. Then take a selfie with Jesus!
