quantum entanglement (…and the two shall become one flesh…)
When a man and woman marry, they become “one flesh”. Christ “indwells” a believer. God is three in one. These central Christian truths all point to mysterious connectedness within reality. The discovery of quantum entanglement gives us a “real-world” example of deeply mysterious connectedness at the core of God’s creation.
Imagine that somehow your arm is severed from your body….and then shipped to the moon. Yet somehow you are still able to control your arm on the moon just as if it was still connected to your body. Instantaneously! That seems unbelievable, yet that is exactly what happens all the time in quantum entanglement.
In Meow Wolf, I introduced the strange world of the very small – the quantum. One of the many bizarre things that happens in the quantum world is called entanglement – where two (or more) particles will somehow become connected, “entangled”, such that even when wen subsequently physically separated by a long distance they can influence each other instantaneously.
Read that last sentence again!
Entanglement is so strange that Albert Einstein refused to accept it – even as the evidence mounted of its reality. He called it “spooky action at a distance” – which is accurate. But the reality of entanglement is now beyond dispute.
Even though we don’t fully understand how it works, we are using the reality of entanglement in unique and practical ways – including encryption and in new quantum computers. Below is a video that gives a good intro to entanglement. The first half is the gist – second half is extra credit!
What are we to make of entanglement? Entanglement exposes in a beautiful way the mysterious interconnectedness within creation on so many levels. I think entanglement gives us a tangible example of several deep spiritual truths. The indwelling of the Spirit of God in the believer is an example of entanglement. I am entangled with God thru faith in Jesus Christ. Christ in me – the hope of glory. Entanglement is also a beautiful picture of the Trinity. Perichoresis is the theological term that is often used to describe the relationship within the Trinity. It means “circle dance”. Marriage is my favorite metaphor connection to entanglement – when two people become “one flesh”. After 34 years with Vicky, we are definitely entangled at every level.
I am grateful for the discovery of entanglement to give us a tangible glimpse into the marvelous interconnectness of God’s creation. Thank you God for entanglement…
toodling and noodling, stan
