Horseshoe Crab
Have you ever seen a horseshoe crab? They are everywhere on the east coast. Turns out the horseshoe crab is a very special creature. It looks prehistoric because it is not having changed body structure much in over 400 million years. Its blood (which is blue when harvested!) has a very special component called Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL), which is extremely sensitive to many toxins and will clot in their presence. LAL is crucial to modern medicine – mandated by FDA for detecting any contamination in vaccines, IV drugs, and medical devices. The horseshoe crab is the only place in the world to find LAL. We are working hard to develop a synthetic alternative but the horseshoe crab remains by far the dominant source. I personally have benefitted greatly thru the years of cancer with thousands of needle “sticks”.
Thank you God for horseshoe crabs.
